Marigold now offers music streaming through Freegal Music eResource

10 July 2018

Marigold is excited to announce that 5 hours/day of streaming on Freegal Music will be available for all of our member library patrons beginning August 1.

Streaming music from Freegal is ad-free. The 5 hours/day of streaming is in addition to the 5 songs/week download limit.

To stream:

Nothing has changed with the download functionality, except that the sample clips are now gone.  Streaming is, after all, a license to sample!

  1. When you put your cursor over an album, you will see a “stream now” button come up. If you press that button on an album, the whole album will play in order.
  2. You can use “Freegal Playlists”.  This is a list of pre-selected songs in a genre that you are sure to enjoy.
  3. To create a playlist:
    • Click on “My Playlists” under “Streaming” on the left side of the page.
    • Click on “Create and Store Playlists”.
    • At the top center of the page, click on the “+” symbol next to “Saved Playlists”.
    • Name your playlist (ex. “The Boss”) and describe it (ex. “Bruce”).
    • In that box, click on “Create New Playlist” and your playlist is ready to add music.
    • Click on the “Home” page and start looking for music to add.
    • To add an album, move your cursor over an album cover and a =+ will appear.  Click on that, and then add to your playlist of choice.
    • To add an individual song, click on the image until you see a play arrow and =+ sign. Pressing the =+ will allow you to add the song to your chosen playlist.

Streaming, just like downloading, can be done on a PC or through the Freegal app.

TRACpac App Discontinued

01 June 2018

Effective, June 4, 2018, the TRACpac app will no longer be updated by the developer, Boopsie, and will be removed from the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store.  The Boopsie App should be removed from devices as of June 4.

For several months, the mobile friendly and responsive design of the TRACpac website has been the recommended option in lieu of the functionality concerns with the Boopsie App.

An App Committee that is comprised of representatives from all four Regional Library Systems in TRAC is investigating options.  Thank you to those of you who recently responded to the TRACpac App survey to determine if an App is required or if the mobile friendly TRACpac.ab.ca website for easy mobile access is sufficient.

Below are instructions to create a shortcut to the TRACpac.ab.ca website on your device as well as how to add your library card barcode to your device.  The shortcut instructions are also available on the TRACpac website under the Announcements side section.

A bold new logo for Marigold

08 February 2018

A bold new logo embodies Marigold's past, present and future:   We are excited to share our new logo as Marigold begins strategic efforts to reach out more broadly to the community. The flower is a direct representation of the name Marigold. The circle and the dot represent a satellite orbiting the earth, the broadcasting of ideas and the growth of a network. A new tagline, EMPOWER YOUR FUTURE, has also been adopted.

The form stems from the initial brainstorm session with Corey Brennan of Elevate Design (in Calgary). Corey took a very meaningful approach to the redesign and worked with Marigold staff and members of the Executive and Advocacy Committee to generate ideas and discussion about Marigold.

Comments from Executive Committee members include:   “I never thought I would vote for another flower but I love this modern look. I also really like how one logo can be used to create so many different looks. This will give us so much flexibility.” And, “I liked it when I saw it during the meeting last week, but now I LOVE it…  It also transitions nicely to all items.  A solid YES from me!”

Marigold CEO Michelle Tombs noted that 2018 will be a year of exciting initiatives, especially as Marigold plans and prepares for a new headquarters building. Also in the works (currently in the research phase) is a new website platform for Marigold HQ and member libraries.

Member libraries have become dynamic flexible gathering places that foster community connections, offer programs and services that respond to community needs, encourage life-long learning, recreation, literacy and innovation.  Regional library systems have changed to provide more direct services to the community. Libraries and regional systems are more relevant than ever!

Marigold was established by agreement on January 1, 1981 and officially opened on April 17, 1982 in Strathmore, in a building that had housed an armoury after the Second World War. Marigold Library System continues to be a champion of public library service throughout south-central Alberta and beyond. The vision of Marigold’s founders has been sustained by participating municipalities and strengthened by Marigold and member library staff, board members and partners. www.marigold.ab.ca/Mission-History

Marigold serves 44 municipalities, Stoney Nakoda and Siksika Nations, the Townsite of Redwood Meadows, 37 member library boards, 36 libraries, 12 book deposits, 2 inter-library loan pickup lockers and over 320,000 people. Marigold member municipalities span the width of Alberta, from the B.C. border to the Saskatchewan border.

Marigold poised for a bright future in Strathmore

Marigold's latest publication, ReNews, keeps stakeholders up to date on progress towards a new Headquarters building.

Marigold Set to Rebrand

22 November 2017
Marigold was established in 1981 with the bright, lively and resilient marigold flower as its logo. In 1992, the logo was changed to a stylized ‘M’ representing books on a shelf combined with the name of the system in a block form. Marigold has grown in leaps and bounds, not only in population served, but in the way in which it offers services and resources. Technology is taking customer service to a new level.

Rebranding supports Marigold’s Advocacy and Communication goal in its 2016-2018 strategic plan. Headquarters staff have been researching and speaking with representatives from companies that provide branding and logo design expertise. In October, a graphic design firm met with the staff and the Executive Committee to start the process. In preparation for the October meeting, staff and committee members enthusiastically answered the designer’s questionnaire which included fun questions like “If your organization was an animal, what animal would it be?” and “if your organization was a car, what kind of car would it be?" In addition to questions like “describe your organization in one sentence, in two words, in one word”.

At the August 2017 Marigold Board meeting, Board members approved a motion to authorize the Executive Committee to proceed with negotiations and to authorize the expenditure of funds for the building of a new Marigold Library System headquarters. A rebrand and new logo as we work on our financing and construction planning for the new building will provide an excellent opportunity to introduce and promote a new look for Marigold Library System. This is a time when Marigold will have optimum exposure to the outside world. The new logo will reflect the abundant energy, capacity and resilience of our library system that continues to grow and flourish.
