Project Gutenberg - eBook titles on OverDrive

News Date:
24 August 2011

By the end of next week, more than 23,000 DRM-free eBook titles will be available through Project Gutenberg on the TRAC OverDrive site. These public domain titles will be available for simultaneous use by all users, without wait lists, holds or authentication.

Best of all, eBooks downloaded from the Project Gutenberg collection won't expire or count against a user's checkout limit -- but they do count toward library circulation, so we will still have the statistics for use.

The titles will not be searchable from the main search feature in OverDrive or in TRACpac; rather, users will click on an icon to access the public domain titles. From that page, one can search through the titles. If you're curious as to what these books look like you can visit the Boston Public Library OverDrive page at http://overdrive.bpl.org/ and click on the icon on the left side of the page that says "Additional eBooks. Always Available."

The timeless stories can be enjoyed on any compatible EPUB eBook reader, computer or mobile device. Memorable titles, such as The Tale of Peter Rabbit by Beatrix Potter and Changeling and Other Stories by Donn Byrne, plus Canadian-specific titles like A History of the Canadian Pacific Railway by Harold Adams Innis, are available.

Watch for a note from Denise at headquarters when the feature is live next week. Once it is, be sure to share the news with your eBook-loving patrons!
